The Department of Philosophy at Patharkandi College came in to existence in this college from the beginning of the establishment since 1990. The study of philosophy contributes distinctively and substantially to the development of students’ moral behaviour. It enhances students’ ability to deal rationally with issues of value and ethical responsibility. With this aim, the Department of Philosophy was introduced in this college. Hence, the primary objective of the Department of Philosophy is to impart quality education and help students to arrive at a rational conception of reality as a whole.
The Department of Philosophy is committed to strengthen its commitment to student success and broadening its recognition for excellence in teaching and social service. The department will advance philosophical understanding, logical reasoning, moral education and debate through both teaching and the production of high-quality thinking as well.
To promote the study of philosophy by conducting original philosophical thinking and by providing students with the philosophical education necessary for them to develop a firm foundation in the liberal arts as well as strong ethical, creative, and critical thinking skills. This department is committed to fostering student engagement with historically important philosophical debates, development in contemporary philosophy and applications of philosophical ideas in all the fields of life.
